Alcoholism and Teens
Billy SunshineFriday, September 14, 2007 I don't think that "alcoholism" is quite a problem among teenagers, but they are getting ahold of alcohol, as they have been for 50 years or more, and it can still lead to the same bad things. In fairness, a lot of the same bad things can also happen to drinkers who are of legal age. I'd hate to think that many parents are so aloof that their kids could fall into alcoholism without their noticing, but that might just be wishful thinking on my part.
Alcohol has been known to lead to such undesirable behaviors as fights and other assaults, drunk driving, unprotected sex and accidental pregnancies, acts of disorderly conduct and citations for simply being drunk and underage.
I think that the issue is that the kids who are engaging in recreational drinking when they are 13 years old are a lot more likely to be full blown alcoholics by the time they're 20 than the kids who aren't drinking that young. Of course some people never touch any beer or liquor until they're 21, and then they go completely bananas anyway.
I'll repeat the common sentiment that it is ridiculous that at 18 years old, you can buy cigarettes, vote, be jailed as an adult and, most notably, risk your life fighting for your country in a war, but you can not have a shot or a beer when you come home at 19 or 20 years old. It is insulting and ridiculous.
Part of the problem is capitalism; Budweiser has a right to spend money to market their product on, say, Monday Night Football, as the program will have a large number of viewers in their target demographic. The side effect (that I'm sure these companies are totally distraught and wringing their hands over) is that teenagers will also see the ads and be influenced to want the product.
The ads make it seem like all you do is throw the case of beer in the cooler in the back of the truck, head to the mountains, and the bikini babes will jump in along the way. All too ofte...
